Launch Your Blog eCourse Overview

Image

I literally learned EVERYTHING I needed to know to be able to start my blog from scratch and launch just 4 weeks later with this course.

Here`s an overview of what you will learn with this course:

  • How to build your blog from scratch using WordPress (no previous experience necessary).

  • How to design beautiful images and make your blog visually appealing.

  • How to create amazing content people love and share.

  • How to build a massive fan base through email marketing.

  • How to navigate blogging tools.

  • How to choose which social media platforms are right for you and how to set them up.

It also includes a private support group and all the tools and resources that you could possibly need!  Plus,  it includes BONUS VIDEOS from their other 2 courses: Pinterest Traffic Avalanche and Six Figure Blogger!

The course content is delivered mostly by video (which I LOVED) but there are also PDF files of the main notes plus tools you can download (like the 1 month launch your blog checklist).

Meet Alex & Lauren from Create & Go!

These two geniuses are the people who inspired me and taught me everything I needed to know to create my blog!

This is their story...

Alex & Lauren are a couple that originally met in Dallas (on Tinder haha), and at the time were working their full time jobs, Alex as a personal trainer and Lauren as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant).

They were dreaming of quitting their soul- sucking jobs and being able to travel together and live life on their own terms.  So, they sold everything, quit their full time jobs and moved into Alex`s dad`s house to devote 100% of their time into starting a blogging career.

In their 1st year alone, they made over $103,000 with their health and fitness blog, Avocadu.com.  Now 2 years later, they have built 2 successful blogs (Avocadu and Create & Go) and are currently making over $50,000 per month!  Talk about pure inspiration!

The cool thing is that they are self- taught.  They created their success by trial and error (they actually had a blog before Avocadu that failed).  That being said, their courses were designed to be the courses they wished they had to guide them when they were first starting out.  They currently have 3 courses on Create & Go:

My experience with the Launch Your Blog eCourse

I had the honor of actually meeting Alex from Create & Go!  We Skyped and I gave him my personal testimony about my experience with the course and then he spent about an hour with me giving me feedback and guidance on my blog!

You can watch the video of me talking to Alex about my experience with the Launch Your Blog eCourse below:

If you`re not in a place to watch a video right now, my story goes like this:

I am originally from Wisconsin, now living in Costa Rica (I met my husband here!).  In my former US life, I was a retail manager for Bath & Body Works for 10 years.  When I moved to Costa Rica to marry the love of my life (Fernando), we organically started working together managing hotels.

We have created quite a following of guests over the past 4 years and have opened our own Airbnb rentals this past year.  With people constantly contacting us to plan their trips to Costa Rica, I really felt like we needed a place where people could go to get all the info they needed and be able to see the services we provide.

One day I was scrolling through Pinterest and came across a monthly income report from Create & Go.  I got hooked immediately learning about Alex and Lauren`s story, about how blogs make money (what!? I never knew that...), etc and decided that creating a blog was the exact thing I needed to do!

After watching many of their videos on YouTube, I decided I really needed to buy the Launch Your Blog eCourse because I wanted to launch my blog the right way and start strong.  I needed someone to hold my hand every step of the way (because I had no idea what I was doing, no previous Wordpress experience, no idea what a plugin was...).

After watching the first video of the course I felt like I had already gotten my money`s worth!  Create & Go really delivered!

I am so happy I made the investment to purchase this course because without it, my blog would still be just a vision and not a reality.

My Favorite Things About the Course

There`s so many great things about this course that I am not sure where to begin about what I loved.

First off, let me say that I absolutely love Alex & Lauren`s teaching style.  The content is delivered mostly by video and they speak very clearly and are super easy to follow.

I was able to have the training videos open in one tab of my browser and my Wordpress dashboard in another tab and then literally create my blog simultaneously while learning.  It was amazing.  I could pause a training video at any time, switch over to my dashboard to do exactly what they just taught me and then resume the training video.

Another thing I loved was the "1 month launch your blog checklist."  This is a printable download that lays out everything you need to do each week to be able to launch your blog in 4 weeks.  This checklist was my bible that month.  It simplified the entire process which at times can feel extremely overwhelming.  I followed it step by step and I was able to successfully launch my blog in the 4 weeks like they promised!

I also love that with the purchase of the course, you get access to their private support group.  You can ask questions and learn from other bloggers, plus Alex and Lauren are really great at answering most of the questions personally.  Their customer service and dedication to their product is really top- notch.

They also update content as needed since technology always changes.  You get life long access to the course and any updates that they make!

How the Course Could Be Improved

The only thing that I can think of that I wish would have been included was a tutorial on how to embed YouTube videos on your blog.  This was the only thing I had to research on my own outside of the course.

Other than that, there is nothing else I would change!

I actually think they should be charging way more than they do for this course because it is worth it!

Is the Launch Your Blog eCourse Right for You?

*This course is NOT for you if you consider yourself to be a Wordpress expert or a professional blogger already.

If you have booked your stay with us at any of our vacation rentals, the next thing you will need to plan out is how you will get here.

Please see the options below to decide which form of transportation is best for you.  We have also provided info about getting around Manuel Antonio and where to go & what to do while you`re here!

5 Things You Must Do in Manuel Antonio

So you`ve booked your trip to Costa Rica and you plan to visit Manuel Antonio. Wahoo! In this awesomesauce article, we will share with you the top 5 things you must do in Manuel Antonio!

Included you will find our favorite things to do for adventure, relaxation and where to eat!

Also, before I get into it, I just want to say that Manuel Antonio is awesome and if you haven`t been here before, you really need to get on it! Alright, here we go…

1. Do the 10 in 1 Tour at ADR Adventure Park!

You literally get to do 10 different activities in the rainforest. It`s awesome and should not be missed!

Fernando and I have done tons of tours all over Costa Rica, and we both think that the 10 in 1 is by far the most well done, complete and fun tour there is! By well done, I mean it`s not just the activities that you are doing are fun, it`s that from the moment you get picked up till the moment you get dropped off, the tour guides have you entertained the entire time teaching you about the area, the flora and fauna, cracking jokes, etc….it`s just a super fun day! It`s a full day tour so they also feed you breakfast and lunch (and snacks in-between).

After you have breakfast at their “base camp” I like to call it…you get to hop into this crazy 4×4 safari truck and be taken deep into the primary rainforest. Honestly, just this ride alone is like a tour in itself.  Then once you`re in the rainforest, the adventure begins!

There`s zip lines, waterfall rappels, tarzan swings, free falling into a river pool, jumping from waterfalls, canyoning, etc.

It`s like a giant obstacle course through the rainforest where you feel like you`re some kind of awesome jungle olympic athlete (but really anyone can do it). It`s awesome- I just can`t say it enough!

2. Go on a Catamaran!

For real though, who doesn`t love an awesome catamaran ride?!

In Manuel Antonio, there`s several different catamaran tours, but the most kick ass one is the Ocean King. This catamaran has 2 trampolines, 2 slides, 2 spash pools, an upper deck to jump off of or sunbathe and includes transportation, drinks, lunch and snacks.

Also, you have a really good chance of seeing dolphins or whales swimming in the wild, maybe even alongside the boat like we did!

Another fun thing about this catamaran is that you get a couple hours to go down the slides, jump off the upper deck (super high and fun!) or go snorkeling!

3. Chill at Playa Biesanz

This beach is in a bay, so the water is usually very calm making it a great swimming beach. Also, there`s beach chairs & umbrellas, kayaks, SUPs and snorkel gear for rent and even guys selling beer & cocktails.

Travel Tips:

  • If you are up for some exercise, you can also hike between Playa Biesanz and Playa Espadilla (the main beach in Manuel Antonio)…it only takes about 40 minutes! Otherwise just drive there or take a taxi and then it`s just a 5 minute walk through the jungle to get to this hidden gem.
  • After the beach, you can go to Shana Hotel (just a couple minutes walk from the entrance of Biesanz) and swim in their beautiful pool if you consume something at the restaurant or pool bar. And then if you`re too tired to walk home, just ask the reception desk to call you a taxi!

4. Take a Guided Wildlife Tour

People always ask me “Do I really need a guide?” …and the answer is simple- YES!

If you want to see a variety of wildlife, there is no better way to do it than with a guide.  If you go by yourself, you will see the same animals you would see just walking around town or hanging out at the beach (maybe some monkeys, some birds, an iguana or two).  With a guide you will see about 90% more wildlife guaranteed.

Where to go?

Of course there is the famous Manuel Antonio National Park, but we actually have found a tour that we like even better (less people, more nature) and consider it to be the best wildlife tour in Costa Rica.  We even have the hookup to get you a discount on this tour, just simply fill out the form below…

5. Sunset Dinner at Barba Roja

Seriously, I don`t think the view can get any better than this. Barba Roja was one of the first restaurants in Manuel Antonio (since 1975) and continues to be one of the best. After a day of adventure it`s awesome to unwind here for dinner and drinks while watching the sunset. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that since the sunset is so epic here, everyone in the restaurant claps after the sun goes down! How fun is that?!

5 Things You Must Do in Manuel Antonio Recap:
  1.  Do the 10 in 1 Tour at ADR Adventure Park
  2. Go on a Catamaran
  3. Chill at Playa Biesanz
  4. Take a Guided Wildlife Tour
  5. Sunset Dinner at Barba Roja

Have you done any of these activities?  Comment below if you`d like to share your experience, or if you have anything you think should be added to the list!

What to Pack for Costa Rica

After hosting hundreds of guests over the past 4 years, I`ve come to realize there are 3 big and very common mistakes that people make when packing for Costa Rica:

1. Overpacking
2. Packing the wrong clothes
3. Bringing totally unnecessary things

Don`t be one of these people.

In this article, I will go over some packing guidelines, what to pack, things I LOVE and recommend, what NOT to pack and other important tips!

Packing Guidelines

To make packing easier, use the following guidelines:

  • Pack for practicality, not a fashion show.
  • Lightweight, quick dry clothes are best.
  • Think casual dress code.

Unless you plan to do nothing but sit at a swim up bar and dress up for fancy dinners, you can ignore what I just said. But if you`re coming to Costa Rica to immerse yourself in nature, go on adventures, see wildlife and actually do all the things that Costa Rica is world renowned for, then these guidelines are what you should be aiming for.

An important thing to keep in mind is that LESS IS MORE in Costa Rica.  It`s the culture here. Nobody cares what you look like or if you have name brand clothes.  Nobody cares if you have makeup on or not.  In fact, you will just look ridiculous if you try to wear makeup in this heat and humidity.  It just melts off your face.

So I encourage you to challenge yourself to leave all your fancy things behind, ditch the eyeliner and mascara and just wear what feels comfortable!  I guarantee it will make you enjoy your time in Costa Rica so much more and you will feel so free!

What to Pack

  • swim suit(s)
  • sunglasses
  • sunblock
  • insect repellent
  • flip flops
  • Columbia Drainmaker Trail Shoes*
  • socks (breathable)
  • quick dry hiking pants
  • tank tops / tee shirts (light weight, non-clingy)
  • shorts or skirts
  • beach cover up
  • casual dresses
  • “nice dinner” outfit (only if you feel like it)
  • lightweight rain jacket*
  • pajamas
  • long sleeved shirt (1 is enough)
  • sports bras
  • yoga pants
  • laptop or tablet (to watch Netflix if your hotel doesn`t have a TV)
  • hammock(s)*
  • passport holder / travel wallet
  • backpack (use for both hiking or your beach bag)
  • water bottle
  • toiletries (keep it simple, just bring the basics)
  • hat
  • GoPro (optional)*
Here`s some extra notes about some of the things listed above:

*Columbia Drainmaker Trail Shoes: These are my absolute favorite shoes to wear hiking, zip lining, waterfalling, etc.  You can walk through water or even go swimming with them on and they drain the water super fast plus dry pretty quickly.  Much better than a flimsy water shoe!

*Rain Jacket: Depending on where and what time of year you are traveling, you may or may not need a rain jacket.  If you are traveling to places like Monteverde or Arenal, you should bring one.  If you are only going to a beach destination (like Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, Nosara, etc) you only need to bring one if you are visiting during rainy season (May- November).

*Hammock(s): These hammocks are super easy to pop up anywhere in about 30 seconds.  So much more comfortable than laying on a towel on the beach or paying to rent beach chairs.  Plus they are small enough to pack in your suitcase.

*GoPro: This is the best camera we`ve found that you can take with you anywhere (even in water!).  Really fun for getting video footage swimming in the ocean, jumping off a catamaran, zip lining, waterfall adventures, snorkeling, etc.

Things that I LOVE and Recommend!

For those of you that prefer a visual list, here are pictures / links to the products that I personally love and recommend that you bring on your trip.

How to Purchase the Launch Your Blog eCourse

Have a Question?

What NOT to Pack

  • jewelry
  • high heels
  • a bunch of makeup
  • beach towel (most hotels or vacation rentals provide these, only bring a beach towel if they do not)
  • hairdryer (it`s too hot for that nonsense)
  • jeans (I call these “leg prison”)
  • any clothing that is remotely uncomfortable
  • fancy, oversized purses

Don`t Forget Your Passport!

Obviously.  But here`s a couple tips you may not have thought about…

To prepare for your trip, double check the current entry requirements with the Costa Rica Embassy just to make sure you`re able to get in the country!

I also recommend making a photo copy or taking a picture on your phone (the photo and information page) of your passport to carry with you so you can leave your actual passport in your hotel room.  It is unlikely that anyone will stop you and ask for it, but just in case it`s always best to have this info on you.

Money Info

The local currency is called Colones, however USD (US Dollars) are accepted pretty much everywhere.

You do NOT need to exchange money if you are bringing USD with you.  If you want to anyways for some reason, NEVER exchange money at the airport, they have the worst exchange rate!  The banks usually are the best place to do this.  When you pay with USD you will most likely get Colones back in change.

There are ATMs readily available in the main tourist destinations, but if you are going somewhere super remote, bring enough cash with you to hold you over.

Many places accept credit cards, but having cash on you in Costa Rica will make your trip a lot easier (souvenir shops, beach vendors selling coconuts, etc).  Also, it is recommended to tip restaurant servers, taxi drivers and tour guides in cash!

Always be sure to tell your bank that you will be traveling in Costa Rica so that you don`t have any problems using your card or getting money from the ATM.

How to Spend the Day at Costa Rica`s Best Hidden Beach- Playa Linda

Welcome to Playa Linda!

In our opinion, this is Costa Rica`s best hidden beach. We have been to tons of beaches all over Costa Rica, and this one is hands down our #1 favorite beach for these main reasons:

  • It`s off the beaten path
  • Not touristy at all
  • There is nothing built on the beach- it`s just sand, water and palm trees
  • The waves are perfect for swimming, boogie boarding and surfing
  • It`s ridiculously beautiful

How To Get There

Playa Linda is located in the south pacific of Costa Rica, between Matapalo and Dominical (only about a 40 minute drive from Manuel Antonio).  The easiest way to get there is by car.  Waze is the best navigation app in Costa Rica, so even though this beach is like a hidden gem, it actually does show up in Waze!  If you are driving without wifi access, here is a quick description of how to get there using landmarks:

1. From Manuel Antonio / Quepos, get on highway 34.  It`s a really pretty drive through palm plantations. It looks like this:

2. You will pass a small town of Matapalo. Keep going and look for these 2 cell phone towers- this is your landmark of where the entrance is. *there is no sign for Playa Linda, you just have to find it!

3. Look for the sign that says “Hatillo Dominical Plantanillo” and turn right at the gravel road entrance:

4. Drive on the gravel road for about 5 minutes and then you will see the beach! Turn left and drive along this path until you find your perfect spot to set up for the day!

When to Go

Weekdays are the best time to go to Playa Linda, as you will most likely be the only people there, or maybe see just 1 or 2 other people.  On the weekends, this is where the locals hang out, so then there will be more people there, but still it`s a huge beach and there`s plenty of space for everyone.

Also, it`s best to go at low tide.  Use a tide chart to see when low tide will be and plan to spend your day there within 2-3 hours before and / or after low tide.  As the tide starts to come in again, that`s the best time for boogie boarding!

What to Pack

  • hammock(s)
  • beach blanket
  • towels
  • cooler / ice
  • plenty of water / drinks
  • lunch and snacks
  • beach toys (frisbee, soccer ball, boogie boards, surf boards, etc)
  • a good book to read
  • music / speaker
  • large jugs of water (to give yourself a little shower and get the salt water off your skin)
  • sunblock 50+
  • insect repellent
  • lighter / fire starting stuff (for beach bonfire)
  • a change of dry clothes (it feels so good to get out of that wet swim suit for the drive home!)

What To Do

First, set up a comfy spot to chill all day.  We love to bring enough hammocks for everyone, and set up a little kitchen area with our cooler and portable grill to have a cookout on the beach.  The whole beach is lined with palm trees, so there`s plenty of shade to set up your area!

Once your spot is set up, now load up with sunblock and go have fun! Our favorite things to do at Playa Linda are boogie board, play soccer with our dog Luka, swing in hammocks, drink fresh coconut water, grill out and have beach bonfires at sunset. Every day we spend at Playa Linda feels like the happiest day of my life! I just LOVE it there.

Tip: Even when there`s nobody else there, there always seems to be this one guy who is walking the beach selling fresh coconuts! He normally charges 1,000 colones ($2) per coconut, but if you speak Spanish and don`t act like a tourist, you could get it for 500 colones ($1). Also, he really appreciates it when you share snacks with him (we always give him some chips or fruit). Drinking a coconut on the beach is the best!

*that`s me with Fer`s brothers enjoying the fresh coconuts

*some of our guests (and now friends) enjoying our favorite hammock

Don`t forget your boogie board or surf board and if you have a dog to take with- even better!

*that`s my mom sporting her boogie board and our dog, Luka, with his favorite frisbee

Build a beach bonfire (you`ll be able to find a bunch of dead palm leaves, sticks and coconuts you can burn) and watch the sunset! Awesome way to cap off the perfect day!

*check out Fernando below making a bad ass bonfire!

Now you know what to do to go and have an adventure on your own. I hope you have the best day ever at Playa Linda! If you need help with your vacation, check out our vacation planning services and / or stay with us!

Manuel Antonio National Park- FAQ

Manuel Antonio National Park- FAQ

Internationally recognized as being one of the most biodiverse parks on the planet, this park has mangroves, hiking trails, 4 different beaches, monkeys, sloths and more!

To plan an amazing day at the park, keep reading our FAQs below so you have all the info you need to know before you go!

Please note, we have partnered with Create & Go as an affiliate for their courses and do receive a commission if you purchase through our link.  This is at no extra cost to you and is a way to help support the time and effort we put into this blog.

Where do I buy tickets?

Tickets can only be obtained through the website https://serviciosenlinea.sinac.go.cr/.

Where do I park?

Around the park entrance there are paid parking lots ($10- $15 per car). If you dont want to deal with or pay for parking, just take the bus or a taxi.

What`s the deal with all those guys and their whistles?

Once you get down to the “beach town” where the park is, you will notice a ton of guys lining the streets blowing their whistles like crazy and trying to get you to stop and park where they tell you to. They will make you feel like you have to listen to them and hire a tour guide to get into the park. You do not. Just politely smile and say “no gracias, pura vida” and keep going until you get to the park entrance (and find a paid parking lot close by).

Can I feed the monkeys?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! You might think it`s cute to feed a monkey a banana, but this is actually harmful to them and NEVER ACCEPTABLE. Don`t leave food out if you swim at the beach. It`s best to hang your backpack in a tree because otherwise the monkeys will open the zipper on their own and steal your food and whatever else they think is cool inside your bag.

Watch out for the racoons too!  They work in teams with the monkeys to try and steal your food….AGAIN, THIS IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE!  The monkeys and the racoons do not know better.  You do, so please do the right thing (not matter how tempted you may be to get the perfect selfie with a monkey) and NEVER FEED THE WILDLIFE!

How To Travel Costa Rica on a Budget

There are 3 things that every trip to Costa Rica has in common. You need to sleep somewhere, you need to eat and you are coming to do activities! Costa Rica is not a cheap country, but that doesn`t mean you can`t enjoy everything it has to offer without spending an arm and a leg!  In this article, you will learn 3 simple ways to travel Costa Rica on a budget.

Save on Lodging

Stay at a vacation rental through Airbnb.

Costa Rica is one of those countries that you can travel and have a really local experience. It`s not like traveling to countries like Mexico where it`s best to just stay inside your all-inclusive resort. There are thousands of vacation rentals available all over the country giving you the opportunity to stay right in a local neighborhood and have a more authentic experience. Also, staying at an Airbnb rental allows you to have your own kitchen which leads me to the next tip…

Las Chirincocas – Jungle Apartments #1

Quepos, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica

Located in the heart of Manuel Antonio, Las Chirincocas is nestled in the jungle where you can see wildlife right in your backyard such as monkeys, sloths, tucans, mot mots, guatusas and of course,…

Save on Food & Drinks

Cook meals at home. Shop where the locals shop. Eat where the locals eat.

Cook at Home:  When you stay at a vacation rental vs a hotel, you will have your own kitchen and can save a ton of money by preparing meals at home. Food in general is expensive in Costa Rica (comparable to US prices and in many cases higher), so the more meals you can prepare yourself, the more of a budget traveler you will be!

Eat Out Like a Local: Now, I understand eating out at restaurants is something that most people enjoy doing while on vacation.  I know I do!  So this is not to say that you should eat all of your meals at home.  To save money eating out at restaurants, go to the local “sodas” which I can best describe as a “ma and pa” type feel of restaurant.  Sodas mostly serve casados (typical Costa Rican meal) for about $5-$7 each.  This price usually includes a natural juice of your choice (my favorite is tamarindo).  Nothing hits the spot like a good casado!

Shop Like a Local:  The main supermarket where the locals shop is called Maxi Pali.  Think of this like a Walmart (they are actually owned by Walmart in fact).  Maxi Pali stores are all over the country and you can stock up on groceries for your trip.  Keep in mind they mostly carry local brands.  If you are looking for American brands, you will need to go to a touristy supermarket (names vary depending on the town).   For example, in Manuel Antonio, at the tourist supermarkets (Super Joseth and Super Pura Vida) you can find many American brands that you are used to from home, but the prices are significantly higher than what you are used to paying. A regular size jar of peanut butter costs something around $16 to give you an idea of how outrageous the prices can be.   For produce, go to the weekly local farmer`s market (la feria).

Alcohol:  This one is simple.  Buy liquor at the airport, duty free!  Buy beer and wine at the local supermarket!

local farmer`s market (la feria)

Save on Activities

Make friends with a local who can tell you what`s free or cheap to do in the area!

Traveling Costa Rica on a budget does not mean you have to miss out on all the cool places to see and things to do!  This is where knowing a local or making friends with one really comes in handy. You can research online all day for cheap things to do, but nothing is quite as valuable as that personal conversation with a local! Also, Costa Ricans are so friendly that if you ask your new local friend where you can rent bikes, for example, if he has one, he will probably lend it to you for free!

Here`s a perfect example of what I mean… Nauyaca Waterfall is about 45 minutes away from Manuel Antonio and is one of the must do activities if you visit this area.  A guided tour is around $130 per person (includes roundtrip transportation and lunch)….so if you`re traveling with a group of 4 people, that is $520 to go to the waterfall.  Or, you can just rent a car for the day ($50- $60) to get there, pay the entrance fee ($8 pp), pack some snacks and hike to the waterfall by yourself.  That takes your $520 waterfall adventure down to less than $100 for your group of four.

Now, please don`t get too crazy and think that you can do every activity by yourself, nor should you! You do not want to miss out on the awesome tours that this country has. Costa Rica really has their act together when it comes to tours (world class safety standards and tour guides) and there are many activities that you absolutely need to do in a group tour like zip line, rafting or catamaran for example.

But no matter where you go in the country, there will always be activities and places to explore on your own. The trick is to do your research and talk to locals to find out where these hidden gems are and how to get to them. Have fun!

How I Quit My Job and Moved to Costa Rica

I meet tourists everyday who say they want to move to Costa Rica. And then what they say immediately after that is, “I guess I have to wait until I retire…” (insert sad face here).

Guys! This is simply just NOT the truth.

I moved here when I was 29 years old without being retired (and I am not rich), and it was really not that hard. Of course moving to another country has its challenges (which I tell you more about in another article), but the point is, if you are dreaming of moving to Costa Rica or another country, I want to let you know that YOU CAN!

In this post, I will share with you how I quit my job and moved to Costa Rica (without being retired!) and how you can do it too in 4 simple steps!

How I Quit my Job and Moved to Costa Rica

The reason why I moved here in the first place was because I met my husband, who is Costa Rican, on my first trip to Costa Rica (you can read more about our story here). I had fallen in love with both him and Costa Rica all in that same trip. Even if I hadn´t fallen in love with Fernando, I´m pretty sure I would have still ended up moving to Costa Rica on my own anyways. It just felt like home to me. I´m originally from Wisconsin, and had always dreamed of living somewhere tropical (I hate winter!)…I just had no idea it would come to fruition in another country! But on that first trip to Costa Rica, I just felt it my gut. This is where I was supposed to be.

After returning home from that trip (I was living in Minneapolis at the time), Fernando and I started skyping for hours every day. The falling in love part happened really fast, and 5 months later I was back in Costa Rica. We had talked about me moving there and I needed to go back to spend more time with Fer in person (it felt too crazy to be in love with someone via skype) and also see if I really could see myself living in Costa Rica. We traveled around the country together and long story short- the answer to both questions was YES! We got engaged on that trip and then I returned back to Minneapolis to start the process of actually making the move.

The actual process was pretty simple. I made the decision, quit my job, sold my stuff and moved. If you are considering moving to Costa Rica (or another country), keep reading to see the 4 steps I took and that you can take to do it too!

How You Can Too in 4 Simple Steps

1. Visit Costa Rica for More Than Just a Week

It happens all the time. You came to Costa Rica for a one week vacation, fell in love with the pura vida lifestyle and now you want to quit your job and move here. AWESOME! However, the reality is that vacationing in Costa Rica and actually living here are 2 completely different things. In fact, about 60% of expats end up moving back to where they came from! So before you completely pick up your life and move here, I highly recommend giving it a “test drive” first to see if it really is the right move for you.  What you should do during your test drive:

  • Stay for at least a month (3 months would be even better)
  • Don`t stay in a hotel, rent a house or an apartment in a local neighborhood
  • Make friends with the neighbors and talk to as many locals as you can!
  • Travel to the different areas that interest you to live
  • Do normal everyday stuff like go to the bank, the hardware store, the post office, etc. to get a feel for what life is like
  • Test out if you will need a car (rent a car for part of your time here, and then use public transportation the other half)

2. Make the Decision to SAY YES!

This seems like a no-brainer, but I think this is the step that holds most people back from ever making the move.

You need to SAY YES with conviction!  Feel confident in your choice!

I knew I wanted to live the kind of life where I could watch the sunset everyday, not be stuck in traffic on my 45 minute commute home from work when it was already dark out!

You can do this no matter how crazy other people think you are.  Trust me, I had my fair share of naysayers, Debbie Downers and Negative Nancys… who all thought I was insane for dropping my “American Dream Life” to move to a less developed country.  But I didn`t care.  I knew in my gut that moving to Costa Rica was the right choice for me, and it was one of the best choices I`ve ever made in my life.

Live your life for YOU, not for other people.

3. Make an Action Plan & Execute It

This step is super exciting, like packing for a vacation except on a much bigger scale!  There will be a lot of logistics that go into making the big move, so make a list of what you need to do and then ACTUALLY DO IT. Seems super simple in theory, but just like anything else in life, humans have a hard time with change and many people just do not take action. So make your plan and take action.

To prepare for my move to Costa Rica, these were the logistics I needed to take care of before I could leave:

  • Quit my job
  • Find out what the penalty was for breaking the lease of my apartment (it was $1200 so I just had to bite the bullet)
  • Make a plan for work (like I mentioned before, I was not rich or retired and needed to figure out how I would make money!)
  • Rent an apartment (this one was easy for me because I was moving in with my fiance, and he took care of that part)
  • Sell my stuff (furniture, car, extra clothes, etc)
  • Prepare my cat for the move (vet visit, current vaccinations, buy him an airline ticket)
  • Buy my ONE WAY TICKET!
  • Get some quality family time in (I dedicated 2 weeks of pure family & friend visiting time before I left)

Depending on your current life situation, your action plan could be just as simple as mine or you may need to add a couple extra things (like if you have kids- where will they go to school?).  So think about your needs and figure it out one step at a time.  There will be moments where you feel like you`re stuck and you might start to doubt yourself, but do not get discouraged. Every logistical “problem” has an answer!

4. Go and Don`t Look Back

At this point, you`ve already “practiced” living in Costa Rica, you`ve SAID YES to the move and you`ve taken care of the logistics. Now, get on that plane and go!

For me, this was the hardest part. I think I cried for about 24 hours non- stop with my family and friends before I actually got on that flight. It is not easy to leave the people you love and who love you, and I will not lie and tell you that it gets easier. Four years later, this is still the hardest part for me and really the only thing that I don`t like about living here. But this is part of the sacrifice I had to make in order to follow my heart and live the life I wanted to create for myself, together with my husband. I`m grateful everyday for the life I`m living and am so happy I gave this gift to myself!

The good news is that if making the move doesn`t turn out the way you expected, you can always go back to where you came from! I was confident to make the move because I knew that if it didn`t work out for any reason, I could just go home. I could get my job back. I could get a new apartment. I could buy new things again. Life would go on.

So go and don`t look back!….unless the person behind you on the plane is kicking your seat, then you can look back and give them the eye! haha!

Our Portuguese Water Dog, Luka!

The purpose of this post is to make you SMILE!

Luka has been “working” with us at hotels his whole life so far and I think most of our guests love him more than they love us! For real though, his name has been mentioned on TripAdvisor as much as ours! So I feel like he deserves his very own blog post.

A Little Bit About Luka…

We got Luka right when he was born 3 years ago, when we lived on the caribbean island, Roatan. He has traveled with us all over Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica (our home) and Panama. He is supposedly a portuguese water dog, although we are certain not a purebred considering we got him on an island. Luka has one brother (our cat Ashton) and one sister (Xena, who still lives in Roatan).

Luka`s Hobbies

He loves to swim, jump (about 5 feet high)!, fetch, dig in the sand and cuddle. His swimming skills are really impressive. He can jump over the waves to fetch his stick and then body surf his way back to shore (too cute!). His latest hobby is learning how to boogie board (his favorite beach is Playa Linda). His favorite treat is a fresh coconut, he likes to drink the coconut water and then eat the meat too (but only after he plays fetch with it first).

So, not to brag or anything, but Luka is pretty much the best dog ever. Sorry for all you single lady dogs out there though, Luka is married to Emma, our friend`s dog!

Want to Meet Luka?

If you want to play with Luka on your trip to Costa Rica, stay with us!
